Wychwood is a small, friendly school providing excellent academic education for girls aged 11 to 18 in a caring, stimulating environment. For us, individuality has always ranked higher than conformity and we value the contributions that each girl can make to the community.
We hope that each member of the school will make many friends, fulfil her academic potential and leave us with the skills and confidence to face the world of university, work and family life in the 21st Century.
Wychwood is a Christian, non-denominational foundation, but welcomes pupils of all faiths.
The school started, in 1897, with one girl. Now there are 150, a third of whom are boarders. For many years we have found this to be an optimum number for harmonious living, and Wychwood’s family atmosphere is, in part, attributable to its size.
Teaching – especially in the exam years – is in small, informal groups. Fifteen or sixteen girls is the average for a GCSE class and there are rarely more than eight girls in any A level subject. Results are excellent and we are proud of our girls’ achievements. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own progress, learning study skills which will serve them long after they have left school behind.
In the boarding environment, small groups of mixed ages share homely bedrooms which have been recently refurbished. Girls change rooms and companions term by term so that everyone soon has friends throughout the school. Younger girls, whether day pupils or boarders, are guided, supported and encouraged by seniors, who, in turn, gain much from their role as older sister. We also offer occasional boarding for day girls if there is space. Parents are welcome at any time to visit their daughters or meet staff.
Girls are encouraged to bring all problems and concerns to their form teacher, to the Head, to another adult or a senior girl. Staff are trained in child protection procedures and actively promote and safeguard the welfare of the children in their care. All lines of communication are kept open.
The best way to find out more about the school is to visit us and see for yourself the warm and purposeful atmosphere. I encourage you to contact the school secretary, Mrs Lobban and make an appointment. You will not be disappointed!
