Situated in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, Central Newcastle High School is one of the country’s leading day schools for girls. Central High is committed to using its strong traditions of academic excellence and sound moral values to offer the girls of today the opportunity to grow into the strong and independent women of tomorrow.
The ethos of the school encourages curiosity, independence and enthusiasm as well as a lifelong love of learning. It offers girls age 3 – 18 the opportunity to develop and mature in an environment that focuses on their individual needs. The academic standards are high and there is a vibrant and happy atmosphere that permeates the whole school. Pastoral care is a priority as the school helps to guide girls through all their stages of development. Sport, Music, Art and Drama are all encouraged. The school achieved the Sportsmark Gold Extension Award in 2005 for its outstanding provision of Sport both within and outside the curriculum. The girls are also involved in a wide variety of other activities ranging from Gospel Choir, to Poetry Society, Greek Drama to Community Service. The school has one of the largest Duke of Edinburgh Award Schemes in the area.
The facilities across the whole school are excellent and all girls are able to take full advantage of them. The Junior Department, based at West Avenue, Gosforth and Chapman House, Sandyford, offer spacious surroundings in which to grow and develop. The Senior Department is located in Eskdale Terrace, Jesmond, where girls benefit from the exciting and stimulating environment provided. There is a purpose built Music School with outstanding facilities as well as an excellent Sports Hall and Sixth Form Wing. A Drama Studio with teaching rooms was completed in Spring 2003. Extensive redevelopment of the Senior Department was completed in October 2006. It includes a new library and ICT suites, new laboratory, multi purpose hall and the creation of an Art School, English Centre and Modern Languages Centre. The Sixth Form facilities have also been extended.
The curriculum throughout the Junior Department is rich and varied and whilst the Foundation Stage and National Curriculum are closely followed, it offers much more including French, Ballet, Classics and instrumental music lessons.
The Senior Department’s curriculum provides a broad and balanced education. During the first three years girls study a wide range of subjects. A discrete ICT course is also in place for all girls within the Senior Department. In Year 9 discussion of career opportunities begin and girls make their subject choices including subjects. Most girls take ten GCSE subjects. In the Sixth Form 28 subjects are offered at AS Level. Most can be continued to A Level. There is a high take up of all three Sciences and Mathematics.
The School’s GCSE and A level results are excellent and in 2006 Central High had the best GCSE results in the region and was placed in the top 100 independent schools in the country.
