Dallam is a mixed, comprehensive 11 to 19 school with boarding and language college status in the rural, southern fringes of the Lake District. Its growing popularity is based on excellent achievement at GCSE, A Level and Oxbridge. It is small enough, in spite of very strong demand for places, for every student to be well known as an individual. There are excellent facilities, including new provision for science, the arts, sport, technology and IT, and there is an extensive programme of sports, clubs and Duke of Edinburgh Award activity. As a language college, there are special opportunities for learning modern languages and for visits abroad. The curriculum is modern but there is pride in the school's long traditions and values. As a community college, Dallam promotes lifelong learning and service to the community.
Boarding at Dallam gives young people the opportunity to live and study at a good, rural, English comprehensive school. Within a small and caring community, they gain confidence and independence whilst learning to get on with others. There is a wealth of study and recreational facilities not available at home or at many other boarding schools. Most British boarding schools are independent, and can be very costly. Because we are one of the few remaining state maintained boarding schools, parents only pay for the accommodation, while the Government pays for the tuition. In this way, there are all the benefits of boarding, but at a fraction of the cost.
Year 12 and 13 students enjoy the unique atmosphere of our 6th form centre at Heversham. They choose from a wide range of A Levels, from Russian to Film Studies or Physics to Outdoor Education – not to mention the huge selection of Community Education certificated courses available to all of our students.
We are also delighted to be the first state school in Cumbria to offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma. A range of subjects are available, with strong international themes throughout. Worth up to 6 or more A grades at A Level, the IB provides excellent preparation for top universities in the UK and abroad.
