The School was founded in 1944 and is now controlled by a Limited Company. Girls are admitted, full-time, to the Early Years Department from the age of three. At age eleven they can be prepared for Entrance Examinations to Public Schools, or make an automatic transition to the Senior School where they can stay until they are sixteen. Most then transfer to Independent or State Schools for A level studies.
The aim of the school is to provide every pupil with a good education, together with a sound moral and intellectual background. Every girl is encouraged to develop as fully as her capabilities and interests allow, with the aim of her being able to choose a career in which she can most happily and usefully serve the community. The school aims to educate, enhance and empower all pupils.
The two departments of the School occupy separate sites, both with modern pleasantly secluded grounds. Each building has its own specialist rooms for practical subjects. The Junior School is now benefiting from a new Hall, while the Senior School enjoys purpose built Science Laboratories together with Art and ICT facilities
Qualified and experienced graduates are responsible for each subject or class across the full range of the National Curriculum. In March 2008 our Early Years Department received an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted report which stated, ‘ The quality of teaching and learning is outstanding and children make excellent progress.’ Our pupils consistently achieve high pass rates at GCSE with 95% attaining 5 or more passes at A* to C grades including English and Maths in August 2008 with 66% of all passes at A*, A or B grade.
Speech training, Drama and Instrumental Tuition are optional additional subjects. French and swimming are taught from Year 3.
Sport plays an important part in the life of the school, with excellent results regularly being obtained in swimming, netball, cross-country, tennis and athletics, in competition with other schools. Extra-curricular activities are also available.
School trips of varying kinds are offered to pupils from Year 5, educational day trips are organised for all age groups. Recent residential visits have traveled to Iceland and Northern France.
The Organisation, Friends of Braeside School, arranges regular social occasions and fund-raising events.
The school aims to provide all the advantages of an independent education as thoroughly, but also as economically, as possible.
