Ellesmere College is a co-educational boarding and day school of 585 pupils aged 8 to 18; it offers both weekly and full boarding. The majority of the day pupils at the College use the College bus service which covers Shrewsbury, Wem, Wrexham, Oswestry, Chester, Tarporley, Market Drayton and Nantwich. As a result of its popularity, £2.5m was spent on new facilities in 2006-7 including an extension to the girls' Sixth Form House, a new boys' Sixth Form House, an indoor swimming pool, science lab, new lighting in the theatre, refurbishment of tennis courts and new kitchens.
The College was founded in 1884: is set in extensive grounds in the beautiful North Shropshire Lake District. Facilities are excellent and various and include many sports fields, six all-weather tennis courts, indoor and outdoor shooting ranges, a nine-hole golf course and has a strong tradition in music and the performing arts and the advantages of a purpose-built theatre. The College sailing club has boats within walking distance on Whitemere.
There is a dedicated Lower School (ages 8 – 13) and a newly opened £1.2m Sports Hall.
While academic results are excellent the College does not measure its success solely in this way. The purpose of an Ellesmere education is to prepare its pupils to face the complexities of modern life rather than simply to pass exams. As a result of this policy aim Ellesmere College combines the best of the traditional and modern. There is an unusual emphasis upon good manners and self-discipline and all pupils follow courses in Spoken English.
The College has a high reputation for the quality of its learning support programme, established over 30 years ago and is a CReSTeD accredited (Category DU) school with a specialist dyslexia unit.
